FROM OUR COMMANDER: GREETINGS AMVETS, SONS & AUXILIARY. This is the month we honor our fallen Veterans. Our Post is responsible for putting flags on the graves at Greenlawn Cemetery. For those who wish to help please meet at Greenlawn at 8:00 am on May 29th. On April 24th there was a Testimonial Dinner for State Son’s Commander Randy Smith. Most of our Post Officers attended and had a wonderful time. It was a great honor to our Post having Randy hold this position this past year. All of us at Post #48 thank Randy for his dedication. On May 4th at the regular Post meeting we will have nomination of Officers. Please attend this meeting if you would like to run for an office. Thanks to all of you for supporting the AMVETS.

FROM THE SONS: Hello fellow Sons, Post and Auxiliary. Spring has finally hit us and we all will been enjoying the great weather. As most know, the Sons take the summer months off from selling meat boards on Wednesday, as we have with bingo on Monday’s. We will be back in September. This time of year brings us to election of new Officers, so if you want to run for an office or want to nominate someone, please attend the next meeting, which is May 5th at 7:30. That being said, this is my final newsletter as my term as your Commander comes to an end. Let me say it was an honor to be the Son’s Commander for the past two years. It’s been really fun and I’m thankful for all the support I received from the Sons, Post and Auxiliary members. Let’s keep supporting our Club and keep it as one of the best Clubs around. Thank you Amvets family….Remember to “say thanks to a Vet”
SCOTT HINDALL, CMDR
FROM THE AUXILIARY: It’s finally not snowing….Yea we all thought it would never stop… so onto warmer thoughts. Speaking of warmer thoughts, the Auxiliary would like to congratulate Randy Smith on a successful year as State Commander. Your Testimonial Dinner and program were wonderful and well deserved. I would like to thank everyone who helped with the Children’s Easter party. It was a great success. I think our 2nd vice, Linda Wegman, deserves a lot of credit for going the extra mile to suit the basket to the child’s age. Thanks Linda. Also, she knows who she is, but thank you to our Easter bunny. We have more thanks going to all those who helped on our first try at a bingo night. We appreciate the support for all who came and played as well. Since it went over pretty well, we are going to take the generous offer from the Sons, and do Monday night bingo for the summer. This will only be happening on the 2nd Monday of each month. This will be May through August. The Sons are also being generous in lettingus use Wednesday nights to sell meat boards and a 50/50 drawing while they takea break for the summer. We will try tofeature summer fare for your grill and those BLT’s. We will need volunteers. So, please help us out. We are going to ask that you sign up for one Wednesday night to sell meat boards, or maybe you can be the volunteer that picks up the meat boards for a month. We will also need sellers for those Monday night bingo games. Don’t forget we need players, too. So, if you are not off on the beach somewhere, come join us for a cool beverage and a little fun this summer. We might even have a surprise for you.

On the 29th we will put flags on the Veterans graves. If you would like to help, please be at Greenlawn Cemetery at 8:00 am. I have had some inquiries about volunteering to help at the AMVETS STATE GOLF OUTING August 21 & 22 hosted by our Post. Golf chairman Dan Mathias will be having ameeting for those interested on Monday May 10th at 7:00 pm in the banquet room. GEORGE W. ALGE, WORLD WAR II POW/KIA MARCH 2, 1945 U.S. ARMY
FROM OUR COMMANDER: Greetings all members of Post #48. June 2010 marks the 60th Anniversary of the Korean War. Several events are being planned. These events are open to all Veterans and their families, but will be honoring Korean War Veterans. Reservations are required, so if you interested in any or all of the following events, more information is available at the Canteen. June 24, 2010 at the National Museum of the United States Air Force there will be an exhibit opening and Dinner Under the Wings. June 25, 2010 at the National Museum of the United States Air Force will be a Freedom Call Military Tattoo. There will be live music, aircraft fly overs and a fireworks show during this event. June 26, 2010 at 130 Riverside Drive in downtown Dayton will be the Korean War Memorial Ceremony. A 13 foot tall granite statue representing all US Armed Forces in tribute to all men and women who served during the Korean War stands at that location. Each of these events sounds exciting and worthwhile. Let’s all honor and remember our Korean War Veterans during this 60th Anniversary year!!!

FROM THE SONS: Hello fellow Sons, Post and Auxiliary as we all wait for spring to come. I want to say thanks to all that attended the Son’s Valentine Surf-n-Turf Dinner. It was the biggest one to date for us. Thank you very much!!! As we look ahead, we would like to invite you to come and show your support for Randy Smith, State of Ohio Commander, as we (Post #48) host his testimonial dinner on April 24th. If you would like to attend, please fill out a form before April 14th. You can get a form in the Canteen. Don’t forget to join us on Wednesdays for our meatboard sales. Also, come and support the upcoming events put on by the Auxiliary (Easter party and bingo night). Don’t forget to say “thank you” to a Vet.
SCOTT HINDALL, CMDR
FROM THE AUXILIARY: I think spring has been buried under a snowdrift, so just as soon as we can dig our way out, we should find signs of spring. The Children’s Easter Party is scheduled for April 3rd from 2 – 4 pm. The sign up sheet will be posted in the Club on the shelf between the bar and the kitchen. It will be there from March 1st until March 18th. The party is for children and grandchildren, ages 0-10 of Post, Sons and Auxiliary members. Instead of the Easter feather party, we will be having a bingo night March 27th. Details will be posted in the Club sometime in early March. We will also be taking our spring casino bus trip to Greektown on April 28th. So, l mark your calendars, find your Greektown club card and find that sock you’ve been stashing your money in. Please sign up early for this. The sign up sheet requires your name as it appears on your drivers license or photo ID. We have to fax this sign up sheet one week before the trip so they can get your comps on your card. If you don’t have a club card, they will issue one for you with the comps on it. The bus will leave the Amvets at 8:00 am PROMPTLY. THE COST IS $30 PER PERSON AND MUST BE PAID IN ORDER TO RESERVE YOUR SEAT. We would like to extend an invitation to all members to come to the April and May meetings. We will have elections in May. We need everyone’s input for nominations and your vote at elections. All members should consider some way to help your Auxiliary, whether you are willing to accept on office or support someone you feel would make a good Officer. Everyone is not cut out to hold an office, but there is so much more to an Auxiliary. We need volunteers, supporters, those with ideas and those who come to the meetings and keep all of us on our toes. We need everyone and each other. Come to the March 4th meeting at 7:30 pm.
JANI HARTZELL, AUX PRES
FROM THE CANTEEN MANAGER: GREETINGS AMVETS, SONS AND AUXILIARY. Only a few more weeks of winter to go, so get your lawn mowers and golf clubs all oiled and ready for spring. Thanks to all who supported and helped make our last two dinners a huge success. We will be having a seafood buffet on March 20th from 5:00 – 8:00. It will include crab legs, fried shrimp, shrimp cocktail, white fish, roast beef, potato, salad and more. The price is $15.00 a person and tickets will be limited. On April 17th we will have a Prime Rib dinner with baked potato, green beans and salad bar. This dinner will cost $13.50 a person and will be limited tickets, also. Entertainment for both events to be announced. We still have some members who have not paid their dues for 2010. We will be removing you from our next mailing if you’re not paid. Come join us for Easter Brunch Buffet. We will serve from 10 – 2 and reservations are required. Please stop out or call with time and number of people. Cost will be $8.50 adults and $4.50 for children 10 and under. I would like to remind all Veterans about the career center. It is a great place to pick up some free courses for yourself. Stop and get a brochure when you get a chance. We have added some new items to the Friday menu…….a couple of deli-style sandwiches and wraps and an appetizer sampler. Stop in on Friday and give them a try. Hope to see you soon at AMVETS Post #48.
